No Kings... But Jesus
Open 1 Samuel 8. Israel comes to Samuel and demands a king. They no longer want to be different from the surrounding nations. Samuel warns them what a king will cost. He will take your sons and your daughters. He will take your fields and your harvests. He will take a tenth of everything you have. The people insist. They want a king. Land on the line in verse 7. God says to Samuel, they have not rejected you. They have rejected me from being king over them. That is the biblical pattern. The human appetite for political solutions to spiritual problems has been with us since 1 Samuel 8. Every empire since has been some version of that demand. Every election cycle reactivates the temptation. We want a king. We want a savior in office. We want someone with power who is on our side. Then move to the New Testament texts. Render to Caesar what is Caesar's. Honor governing authorities. The great multitude from every nation worshipping the Lamb. The full sweep is this. Yes, participate. Yes, vote. Yes, honor the office. But do not give it the weight of your soul. Voting is participation, not salvation. Power is stewardship, not savior. Hope is anchored beyond the outcome. Close with the Revelation 7 image. The great multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing before the Lamb. That is the Kingdom your ballot is not going to elect. It is also the Kingdom you already belong to.
